The House in the most beautiful village

Née c. 1920, it’s an old vigneron’s house (a vigneron is a kind of tenant farmer/wine grower) built by a family called Jeanjean, who were also the village boucheres. Three generations of JeanJeans lived in the house. They are lovely people and return to the village every November on All Saints Day to visit the house and pay their respects in the local cemetery. They built one of the village’s first water-tanks (now our cave) and were quite the bee’s knees round these parts. Allegedly, Maman JeanJean made the finest salamis in this part of the Languedoc. Downstairs was a huge, open, mud-floored garage where the wine, tractors, the odd donkey and the goats whiled away the hours. The entire family lived, cooked and hung out upstairs. We bought it in autumn 2000 and spent our first Christmas here in 2002. The pool was finally finished in August 2003 just in time for Little Daisy Gates to have her first swim at the age of four weeks. It has just completed its stunning new renovation with a ‘petit plage’ addition for those hot summers.

The Kitchen

This is a foodies paradise. A huge kitchen with a bar to serve the finest cocktails or local wines, serve the saucisson, fresh bread or local nectarine tart. An enormous fridge to stock up on local foods and an extra drinks fridge aside. A kitchen where you are part of the party with the finest views on all three sides. You will never want to leave...With the added luxury of a huge plancha outside and barbecues, there is nothing your culinary skills are going to miss.

The Pool

High up there on one of the nicest sparkliest pools you will never want to get out of. Utter heaven in our very own garden. Rennovated in 2025 to include a Petit Plage and a new salt system… as the summers get hotter and hotter, you can now lie in the plage and read whilst cocktails are served - in plastic glasses please

The Village

St. Pons de Mauchiens has a very long history and the old ramparts in the village are amazing to wander through on a warm balmy evening. In the village we have a shop which is open 7 days a week for your fresh bread, croissants etc.

We also have a new guinguette. A guinguette (often misheard or misspelled as "guinegette") is a traditional type of French open-air drinking and dancing establishment for that all important "cold beer", easy meal and goodness knows what local wine you might be offered. Everything is in walking distance. They were especially popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but have seen a revival in recent years as trendy spots that celebrate old-school French joie de vivre. Ours is behind the local Marie.

There are numerous festivals and fetes throughout the year.

St. Pons de Mauchiens is one of only two villages in France where the rare Crecerellette Falcons nest.

The Garrigue which is below the house is an area of natural countryside perfect for walking, mountain biking or jogging. There are tennis courts in the village and a lovely play park for the younger children.

The nearest beach is Meze, just a 10 minute drive away. Meze has a lovely selection of seafood restaurants, night markets in the port and always something going on.
